What is FTP?
- FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol"
- The purpose of FTP is to send files such as word documents and images
from one computer to another over the Internet.
- You should not send large files as e-mail attachments!
- Once you set it up, the FTP site will work just like a folder on
your hard drive or on your desktop, you should be able to drag and
drop your files to the IDC FTP server just as if you had the folder
on your own computer.
- You need some type of FTP software to use FTP. Windows comes with
FTP software built-in. You also can use commercial software; many programs
are free or inexpensive.
Why use the IDC Server?
- To upload and manage files on your website
- The server is a computer on our network so we don’t have to
wait for downloads.
- This allows everyone to collaborate on line and work with the latest
files and documents.
- FTP is faster than using E-mail attachments
- E-Mail attachments have file size limitations
What can I do with the IDC Server?
- You can upload, download, delete and create new files and folders.
- With Windows you should be able to drag and drop files from your
desktop to the server.
- Remember, when viewing folders in FTP mode, you cannot click on them
like on a webpage, you are in FTP protocol. Right-click the file
and follow the instructions
What do I need to connect to the server?
- Internet Connection
- Windows 98 or better
- Apple users need FTP Software
- You need to know the FTP URL
- Valid Account (Username & Password)
- You may have to change some of your browser settings or FTP software
